DESCRIPTION

This degree is designed to provide for the first two years of college preparation for students wanting to become secondary education teachers, and/or who plan to become a paraprofessional (Instructional Aide).

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Apply the dimensions of multicultural education to support appropriate pedagogical practices for teaching diverse students in Secondary Education.

  2. Select technology tools for integration across the curriculum in Secondary Education.

  3. Synthesize the major theoretical perspectives and methods of educational psychology to teaching, learning, and schooling in Secondary Education.

  4. Choose formative and summative techniques for evaluation and modification with group and individual instruction and learning strategies in Secondary Education.

  5. Evaluate the historical, legal, and philosophical foundations and issues related to contemporary Secondary Education.

General Education Requirements

TOTAL GENERAL EDUCATION CREDITS: 32

300-level and above courses cannot be used to satisfy GE requirements.
Courses with a B suffix (i.e. 100B) cannot be used to satisfy general education or degree requirements for Associate of Arts, Associate of Business, and Associate of Science degrees. B suffix courses may not be transferable within NSHE.

Mathematics (3 Credits)

NOTE: Your first college-level MATH course MUST be completed before reaching 30 total college-level credits.

  • or MATH 120E - Fundamentals of College Mathematics Expanded or above (except MATH 122 andMATH 123)

English Composition (6-8 credits)

NOTE: Your first college-level ENG course MUST be completed before reaching 30 total college-level credits.

  • ENG 100 - Composition Enhanced
  • or ENG 101 - Composition I
  • or ENG 110 - Composition I for International and Multilingual Students Expanded
  • or ENG 113 - Composition I for International Students
  • and

  • ENG 102 - Composition II
  • or ENG 114 - Composition II for International Students

Analytical Reasoning (3 Credits)

  • PHIL 102 - Critical Thinking and Reasoning
  • or PHIL 102H - Critical Thinking and Reasoning – Honors

Natural Science (7 Credits)

Seven credits of coursework to include at least one laboratory experience.

  • ANTH 102 - Introduction to Biological Anthropology
  • or ANTH 110L - Biological Anthropology Lab
  • or any AST prefix course
  • or BIOL 101 - Biology for Non-Majors or above
  • or CHEM 105 - Chemistry, Man and Society or above
  • or any ENV prefix course
  • or GEOG 103 - Physical Geography
  • or GEOG 104 - Physical Geography Laboratory
  • or GEOG 117 - Meteorology/Climatology
  • or any GEOL prefix course
  • or any PHYS prefix course

Humanities (7 Credits)

Recommended: SPAN 111.

  • and anyWorld Languages 111 or above course (this includes the following course prefixes: ARA, ARM, CHI, FIL, FREN, GER, GRE, ITAL, JPN, KOR, LAT, PORT, RUS, SPAN, and THAI).

Fine Arts (3 Credits)

  • any ART prefix course
  • or DAN 101 - Dance Appreciation
  • or any MUS prefix course (except MUS 100)
  • or PHO 101 - Beginning Photography
  • or any THTR prefix course (except THTR 275)

Social Science (3 Credits)
