This is probably one of the most famous mascaras, if not the most famous mascara at the moment: the Maybelline Sky High Mascara. This mascara went viral on TikTok because so many people tried & loved it. The beauty community quickly picked up on this, and everyone talked about how amazing this mascara is.
I had to wait for a while before it was finally available here in the Netherlands, but the moment I was able to purchase it, I went for it. Let’s see if this mascara is that good!

Overall, I like this Maybelline Sky High mascara but not as much as some people on TikTok did. I do not love it, though! The effect of the mascara is good and does what is promised. I’m unhappy about the transfer because this mascara is ruining a makeup look. It’s a bummer that this mascara doesn’t hold up all day and eventually starts to flake.

How To Use

Things To Note
The Maybelline Sky High mascara is allergy-tested and ophthalmologist-tested. It is suitable for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers. On top of that, the mascara is removed easily.
However, Maybelline isnot a cruelty-free brand. It tests on animals where required by law, and it is available for sale in countries with mandatory animal testing. Its parent company, L’Oréal, also tests on animals.

The Maybelline Sky High mascara retails for $9.99 and is available at Target, Ulta, Lookfantastic, and Beauty Bay. The mascara is available in the shade ‘Very Black’ and ‘Brownish Black’ + in a standard version and a waterproof version. I got the shade ‘Very Black’ in the standard version.
Maybelline Sky High Mascara Review
I noticed immediately that the mascara transferred to the lid while applying, so I got a lot of mascara on my actual lid, so much it almost created an eyeliner line, if this makes sense. Looking closely at the pictures, you can tell that my soft liner looks blacker after applying mascara.
I wouldn’t say I like this at all. Since I have hooded eyes and pretty small lids, I often have mascara transferred to the lid, but this was not just a little bit.
The mascara’s effect is visible, and I like how it makes my lashes look. They’re lifted, lengthened, and have more volume. I also really like the size of the brush because it’s easy to apply the mascara to the top and bottom lashes. The flexible brush also lets me get to the smallest or hardest-to-reach hairs.
The Maybelline Sky High mascara makes my lashes look black, and you don’t need many coats to get the results. It doesn’t make my lashes stick together and give that spidery look, thankfully. However, the mascara isn’t holding my lashes up all day.
To avoid this, I like to apply the Marc Jacobs Beauty At Lash’D mascara on top. I feel like this combination works well and keeps my lashes in place. BUT a mascara shouldn’t need help to hold lashes, obviously, so it is pretty disappointing to me.
The mascara doesn’t smudge throughout the day, just right after applying it. It does flake a little after wearing it for ~7 hours. It’s not the worst I’ve ever seen, but I have mascaras that don’t flake at all so this is a bit of a ‘meh’.
Before & After
I applied the mascara to one eye to show the difference but haven’t applied it to the other eye yet. I only used a little bit of eyeshadow to create a soft liner. The left eye has mascara on it, and the other has nothing on it.
Alternatives
- Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara: My OG mascara that I keep returning to is the Better Than Sex Mascara. Another mascara isn’t completely similar to the brush (the Better than Sex Brush is hourglass-shaped and works well), but the formula is better than the Maybelline Sky High mascara. However, the Too Faced mascara is twice the price.
- Milk Makeup Kush Mascara: The brush of the Kush Mascara might be a little too big for you if you’d appreciate the brush of this Maybelline Sky High mascara. However, I do think the Kush Mascara has a better formula that really makes my lashes look volumized and lengthened without smudging or transferring. I recommend trying this one out if you don’t mind a bigger brush!
- MAC Stack Mascara: Brush-wise, I think the Stack mascara brush is quite similar! It is a little bit less flexible, but I don’t notice this in a bad way when applying the mascara to my lashes. I might even prefer the stability a bit more, as I can reach small spots either way with this mascara. This formula never transferred to my lids and looks amazing all day long. I love the MAC Stack Mascara more than the Maybelline Sky High mascara.
Final Verdict
Overall, I like this Maybelline Sky High mascara but not as much as some people on TikTok did. I do not love it, though! The effect of the mascara is good and does what is promised. I’m not happy about the transfer because this mascara is ruining a makeup look. It’s a bummer that this mascara doesn’t hold up all day and eventually starts to flake.
To be 100% honest, even though I don’t hate this mascara, I’m sure I won’t repurchase it. However, this mascara might work fine if you usually never have mascara transferring to your lid. It’s common for me, but I’ve never had this happening so severely before. If you have never had this problem, it’s worth trying this mascara. I’m skipping it!
